15 Thought-Provoking Journal Prompts

We often hear how therapeutic and soothing journaling is, but what exactly are we supposed to write about? Before blogging, I had a vast collection of freshly-purchased floral print journals and blush-colored spiral notebooks that would collect dust on my desk. I would have so many thoughts throughout the day, but when I sat down to write I couldn’t put them into words.

If you’re anything like me, you struggle with getting those brain juices flowing. And that’s OKAY. Grab a cup of tea and find a comfortable, quiet place in your home. Here are fifteen thought-provoking journal prompts to get you started:

  1. What are the five things you love most about yourself and why?
  2. Who is one person you are most grateful for today? Elaborate.
  3. Write three commitments you will make to change for the better.
  4. Think about your life from childhood to adulthood. Name four of your favorite memories.
  5. What is one thing you need to forgive yourself for?
  6. Write down ten things that made you happy today.
  7. Write an open letter to someone you need/want to have a heart-to-heart with but refrain from sending. Or don’t!
  8. If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go? Write down three of your top places in order.
  9. Do you love your current career? If so, write down five reasons why. If not, what would be your dream job?
  10. Write down one person that inspired you today.
  11. What are three things you want to accomplish this week? What will you do to achieve them?
  12. Think about one fear you have. How can you learn to overcome it?
  13. Describe in detail one thing you are proud of yourself for.
  14. Find one inspirational quote and describe what it means to you.
  15. Write down three kind words to describe yourself. Elaborate on why you chose each word.

My hope is that this list will help you to learn to celebrate yourself a little more often and find more positivity in your life daily. Journaling can help you reflect on your aspirations and dreams and whether your habits and values are aligning with those. The more you write, the easier it becomes. You can replace your mornings with journaling to be more productive or to help you feel more centered, or you can simply end your day with writing to reflect on your day in a positive way. Before you know it, you will be journaling like a pro. I challenge you to use this list to start your journaling journey.
