“The quickest way to acquire self-confidence is to do exactly what you are afraid to do.” – Anon

I can vividly remember finishing undergrad and having an extra ounce of confidence in my step and the gleam of a woman who reached a long-awaited goal.

I was certain the next step was my dream job. As an avid planner, I was sure I had everything mapped out perfectly. What I didn’t account for was being rejected by at least nine companies.

Hearing ‘no’ repeatedly began to take a toll on my spirit. One afternoon, I used the last bit of savings in my little nest egg to buy a suit that was way out of my budget as a fresh college graduate. I had zero interviews on the horizon, and I did not apply for any new jobs after my extravagant purchase. But I had faith in God and confidence that I’d put it to good use sooner than later.

Two days later, I received a call to interview for a job at a company I’d applied to months ago – maybe even a year prior. I walked with confidence in my new grey suit and remembered who I was at the core. After going through two rounds of interviews, I received the great news that I got the job!

At some point in life, we will all experience self-doubt and wavering confidence. BUT it is up to us to control that inner dialogue and remember who we are at the core.

Sometimes, we must go out on a limb and do the thing that scares us the most. Had I not believed in myself, I would have missed that opportunity.

Here are 4 ways to instantly boost your self-confidence:

1) Write down three accomplishments.

This is a quick way to interrupt your negative self-talk and transform it into positivity. It can be small wins you had throughout the day or a goal you reached that brings you a sense of pride and fulfillment. Just make it specific to YOU!

2) Put on your power suit.

Stop waiting for a day to pull out that special outfit tucked in the back of your closet. Clothing is a way to express ourselves. Think of the first day of school as a kid. You’d put out your best new outfit and walk in the next morning as your most confident, self-assured self. 3) Solve a problem for someone else.

One of the most rewarding things we can do is help others. When you help someone else, it is a great reminder that we have purpose and what we do matters.

4) Keep a list of three positive core values.

When we have unpleasant experiences or slide back into undesirable circumstances, it is SO easy to identify with that negative inner self-talk. BUT if we keep a list of positive words that define who we are at the root of it all, our thoughts will realign with our true self – which is a happy, thriving, and strong-minded human. Write these down on a sticky note or even a note on your phone. Commit these three values to memory, and your behavior and mindset will align with these values.

Conclusion

Our most confident self is attainable if we allow ourselves to take that leap of faith. Confidence is one of the most important assets we can possess. Confidence transforms our mindsets and gives us the power to become the most valuable versions of ourselves. When you feel any ounce of self-doubt, simply write down three accomplishments, put on your power suit, help someone else, and remember your three positive core values. Here’s to becoming the most confident and happy versions of ourselves!
