6 Things You Need For the Ultimate At-Home Spa Day
Why is self-care such a trending topic today? According to a study done by the APA published in 2011, “One in four women admit they are not doing enough when it comes to managing stress while only 17 percent of men feel this way.”
So, you ask – what is the obsession with self-care? My opinion is that women today, ten years later, are truly evolving into these amazing, well-balanced, self-assured beings. We are taking care of our mental health and realizing self-care goes well beyond a child-free grocery store trip or going for a walk through your neighborhood. It is recognizing that you are not just a human that exists to make everyone else’s life easier, but a person who deserves nice things and quiet moments. Thus, the strong need to constantly remind women to practice self-care was born and remains a high-ranking topic for women today.
My outlook on self-care remains unchanged: it should be easily attainable, simple, and cost-effective so that every woman can access it. So let’s talk about a trip to the spa. On average, any individual treatment will cost about $100 and an entire day can cost you anywhere from $300 and up. If luxury is your thing, I say go for it! But if you are a savvy saver or a college student on a budget, you still deserve the relaxation of a spa day without breaking the bank.
Here are four benefits of an at-home spa day:
- Freedom. You have the freedom to do it YOUR way. Enjoy the flexibility to use your favorite products and choose how long you spend doing each step.
- Privacy. Avoid any awkward interactions with others and completely zen-out in the comfort of your own home.
- Flexibility. Rather than take a full day off of work, put aside two or three hours to pamper yourself. Having the tools you need at your disposal gives you the power to make it work for YOU!
- Improved mood and better sleep quality. Imagine how relaxed you will be after an evening (or morning) of blocking out time for self-care. Your mind and body will thank you!

Having said that, let’s do a step by step walkthrough of a night full of relaxation and pampering and practicing mindfulness all in the comfort of your own home:
Let’s start with a steamy hot shower using Bella and Bear Goddess Sugar Scrub – Exfoliating Body Scrub. Use this to exfoliate your skin and remove dead cell skins. I have extra sensitive skin (I mean sensitive to the point where I’ve had to see multiple dermatologists) so I love that this product has all-natural ingredients and is vegan friendly. One thing I’ve noticed with scrubs is how drying they can be, but this product has so many hydrating ingredients and a very nice light scent. Though the product description says we can use the scrub on our face, if you have sensitive skin like me I suggest you wait for step #4!
Slip into your rose gold satin kimono to cool off after your shower. I know that we are used to the traditional fluffy white robe BUT let’s have an honest moment here. The feeling of silk on your skin after a warm shower is much more soothing, and this silk robe is so breathable and functional. I do recommend sizing up for a comfy, loose fit. It is PERFECT, but it does run a little small.
Post-shower, it is a MUST to moisturize our skin. There is something so therapeutic about massaging moisturizer into my skin especially after a hot, steamy shower. Bliss Naked Body Butter smells amazing and has thick, vegan-friendly formula.
Time to exfoliate the face. I try to avoid exfoliating my face in the shower careful not to dry out the skin on my face. Use the Gackoko Facial Cleansing Brush to get the ultimate fresh face feeling. I always love using a spin-brush on my face to exfoliate dead skin cells and tighten my pores. This particular set has three brush heads so you have options!
Jade roller time! These rollers have gained so much popularity in the last year or two, and they are completely worth the hype! Add your favorite skin moisturizer to your face and roll it out using your jade roller. I don’t have a specific brand I recommend for this, but I have yet to get bad feedback on any rollers. If you’re not familiar with these, these rollers help reduce puffiness around your eyes and tighten the skin. For a bonus, prep your roller by keeping it chilled in your fridge while you complete steps 1 through 4. It feels so calming on your skin and the coolness will help tighten the skin as well!
Now that we’ve completely cleansed our bodies, it’s time to cleanse our minds. I think one of the reasons women look to the spa for relaxation is to find some peace. So, this last step will ensure you do just that! Pour yourself a hard-earned glass of wine and light your favorite candle or scent diffuser to set the mood. Crack open your journal to have a moment of mindfulness and clarity. I personally love the Self-Compassion Workbook that has empowering journal prompts that are equal parts inspiring and thought-provoking.
So there you have it, ladies: a night of relaxation under $100. You can have the relaxation without breaking the budget. This simple step-by-step guide will be the perfect way to unwind. Start with a steamy shower to exfoliate your body, dry off and throw on your silk robe, moisturize your skin, give yourself a quick facial, jade roll it out, and finish with a mindfulness practice. Invite a few friends over and indulge a bit together, because after all, YOU deserve it. There are SO many amazing products to use for an at-home spa night, so make sure to pass it along to your fellow sister so we can all put a little extra self-care in our routines.
